Community + Firefighters: Stronger Together
by Kerrie Meyler
SCENIC HIGHWAY OF LEGENDS — The ride must go on, and neither rain, snow, sleet, nor fire will stop the Stonewall Century Ride.
The Century Ride is a 102 mile out-and-back ride on Colorado State Highway 12, the scenic Highway of Legends, between La Veta and Segundo, reaching 9,995 feet of elevation at the top of the pass. It is a beautiful and challenging ride, organized by the Spanish Peaks Cycling Association, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization.
Each year, after paying the bills, Spanish Peaks Cycling donates proceeds from the ride to other local non-profit organizations. The bulk (90%) is donated to the La Veta and Stonewall fire protection districts. With the Spring Fire, there is a newfound respect for these amazing firefighters who saved the area.
This year, the Stonewall Century Ride is scheduled for Saturday, August 11. Many have contacted ride directors wondering if the Spring Fire would result in cancelling the ride. That’s not happening. The ride is not cancelled. It is alive and well.
While there was no fire damage to La Veta and Cuchara, both communities were economically impacted by the 108,000+ acre Spring Fire. These two areas rely heavily on the summer tourist trade, and the fire discouraged tourism for an important week of the summer. Spanish Peaks Cycling wants to use the Stonewall Century Ride as a springboard to reinvigorate the summer commerce in these two towns.
