Springer Town Picnic – Creating Community

SPRINGER — On August 23, the Town of Springer joined forces with FNB New Mexico (FNBNM) and put on a whopper of a cook-out for Springer residents. Hamburgers and hotdogs provided by the town were served as the main dish, while citizens provided side dishes and desserts.

Mayor Boe Lopez, who helped serve food said, “This is what we need. More gatherings like this to create a sense of community.” More than one grateful resident thanked Lopez for putting on the picnic which was held behind the senior citizens center in the pleasant evening air.

Several door prizes were given out during the event. Odilia Romero was the lucky recipient of a $15 gift certificate to Handiway. Phalysha Kennedy and Donna Klassen of FNBNM provided the following prizes won by these lucky folks: a $25 gift certificate to Zayra’s Café won by Bertha Armijo; a $25 gift certificate to Sunnyside Hardware won by Chemo Apodaca, a $25 gift certificate to Elida’s Café won by Sam Blea who helped cook the burgers and hotdogs for the cook out; and a $25 gift certificate to Blue Heaven Coffee Shop won by Jackie Roberts.

All in all the picnic was well-attended and Lopez commented that the turn-out was so good, he was at first worried that they would run out of food. But the food held out as did the weather, and thanks to many volunteers too numerous to mention of both labor and covered dishes, the Springer Town Picnic was a raging success.
